Pleasurable evenings in the open air with great gastronomic offers await you at the Danube Canal, where that Riviera feeling is created at Strandbar Herrmann , on the Badeschiff at Tel Aviv Beach , at Café Bar Urania and at Adria Vienna . Open-air enjoyment is also on the cards at the Summer Stage , Sand in the City and at the university campus in the Old General Hospital . Summer in the MQ turns one of the world’s largest cultural districts into an urban city oasis of joie de vivre, where life pulsates late into the night – until it is time to dance the night away in trendy discos such as the "Volksgarten", "Flex" and "U4".

Head for fun at the festivals

The Musical Film Festival at City Hall Park is once again the meeting point for classical fans and night owls this year – with lots to please the palate as well as a free film shows (June 27 – August 30). And at ImPulsTanz , Europe’s biggest dance festival, choreographers from around the world offer current works and classics of modern dance (July 9 – August 16).

There’s music is in the air

For musical lovers, the Raimund Theater is performing "Rudolf - Affaire Mayerling" (until July 4 and from September 6), the tragic life story of Crown Prince Rudolf. Vienna’s newest opera house, the Theater an der Wien, puts on a premiere every month. The Operimsommer ’09 program includes Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" (July 2 – August 14). Operettas and musical summer evenings are on offer at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn – with performances including Carl Zeller’s "Der Vogelhändler". 

Exhibition summer and beach fun

Vienna’s exhibition summer is a colorful and varied as ever. And the palate will also be treated to summertime delights here.

The Museum of Modern Art gives an insight into the creativity of American painter, photographer and ready made artist Cy Twombly (June 4 – October 11). The Belvedere dedicates a comprehensive exhibition to Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , one of the most important painters of the Biedermeier period (June 9 – October 11). Meanwhile, at the Vienna Museum Karlsplatz, the focus this summer is on the fashion of the Ringstrasse period (June 11 – November 1).

The exhibition Das Porträt at the Vienna Kunsthalle deals with the relationship between photographer and subject (July 3 – October 18) and is showing photographic works of German artist Thomas Ruff under the title ‘Surfaces, Depths’ (until September 13).

Beach fun …

... is offered in all its purity on the sand and gravel beaches of the 21 kilometer-long Danube Island , where sports facilities, restaurants and bars increase the enjoyment of summer. And on the banks of the Old Danube there are not only nostalgic summertime pools, but also boat rental points and the occasional restaurant terrace.

An excellent way to discover Vienna in summer is the Vienna Ring Tram . It runs on the Ring Road orbiting the Old City (at 30 minute intervals!) and takes in sights such as the Vienna State Opera, Imperial Palace, Parliament, Vienna City Hall, and much more.
