Creative recycling in Vienna

The TrashDesignManufaktur makes products from electrical waste and discarded devices. The stool was once a washing machine drum. The washing machine door is given a sandblasted pattern to turn it into a bowl. Visitors to the TrashDesignManufaktur are also amazed by necklaces made from mobile phone buttons and keychains made from memory chips. People who by these unique items of handicraft are not only contributing to sustainability, but also supporting a social project.

The designers and artists of Gabarage make the useless usable again. Here, old film strips become lamps, the sofa was once a rubbish bin, and the component parts of a broken shuttlecock are now earrings. The showroom on the gallery street of Schleifmühlgasse is always worth a visit.

Fashion design from recycled fabrics is also becoming increasingly popular. Young designer Julia Cepp returns discarded textiles to the value creation chain. Her label mija t. rosa includes a number of items made from fabric leftovers and recycled fabrics. The Viennese label Steinwidder has dedicated itself entirely to the topic of "Remade Fashion". Anita Steinwidder produces her collections from used clothing, which is cut, torn and re-arranged.

Glanz&Gloria is a dedicated shop that specializes in fashion based on waste materials and textile waste. In addition to the previously mentioned labels mija t. rosa and Steinwidder, the shop will also offer clothing designed by km/a: Jackets and dresses made from 1960s umbrellas and coats made from discarded army blankets.

In the Yppig Eco Fashion Showroom on Yppenplatz, Cloed Priscilla Baumgartner presents her label Milch. She buys discarded men's clothing, which she washes, cuts and combines into new creations. Old pants and shirts have new life breathed into them and return to the market as dresses or blouses.

The label Kamaeleon does something similar: the recycling fashion for children, with humorous and imaginative details, is produced from second-hand men's shirts, tablecloths or bedding. The President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, and Mayor of Vienna, Michael Häupl, have donated shirts to be redesigned and auctioned off.
