At the opening on Palm Sunday each year, the Vienna Philharmonic plays at the Musikverein. This time, Pierre Boulez conducts works by Igor Stravinsky ("Symphony of Wind Instruments", "Symphony of Psalms") and Léos Janácek ("Glagolitic Mass") on 27 March.
Dance follows on 28 and 29 March at Theater an der Wien: choreographers Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker and Jérôme Bel have created the ballet "3Adieux" to the sounds of Gustav Mahler's "The Song of the Earth". Keersmaeker dances in her own work; Sara Fulgoni sings and the Ictus Ensemble plays live. By the way 2010/11 are Mahler years .
At the Minoritenkirche there follow, amongst others, Joseph Fux's Oratorium "Cristo nell' orto" and the Chorus sine Nomine with Francis of Assisi's "Song of the Sun".
Martin Haselböck brings Georg Friedrich Händel's early oratorium "La Surrezione" to the stage in the Court Chapel with his Vienna Academy. The Vienna Symphonic under the direction of Fabio Luisi brings the festival to a close with the programme "Spring in Vienna" at the Musikverein on Easter Sunday.
