The Vienna State Ballet will be performing at roughly 80 events both at the Vienna State Opera House and in the Volksoper. Under the direction of Manuel Legris, a former danseur étoile of the Paris Opera ballet, the ensemble will soar to new heights. Vienna's top dancers will perform no fewer than 25 different ballets during this season.
Four premieres are on the program at the Vienna State Opera House in 2011/2012: La Sylphide by Pierre Lacotte - the romantic ballet par excellence - as well as works by Roland Petit, the Nurejev Gala 2012 and Stravinsky Violin Concerto by George Balanchine. But ballet fans can also look forward to classics as well: Sleeping Beauty, Anna Karenina and Don Quixote. Various mixed evenings, including the hit Schritte und Spuren, offer a place on stage for modern choreography.
The Vienna Volksoper will be graced by performances of Le Concours, Marie Antoinette and the popular family ballet Max und Moritz. A dance program will also be arranged to Orff's Carmina Burana, Debussy's Afternoon of a Faun and Ravel's Bolero.
Non-classical ballet, which nevertheless demands the highest levels of physical prowess, will be demonstrated in the Lord of the Dance. Michael Flatley is bringing his spectacular step show to the Vienna Stadthalle on May 11th and 12th.
