Vienna Boys' Choir

They thrill the concert-going public around the world, are described as Vienna’s youngest ambassadors, and make music with world class musicians: the Vienna Boys' Choir. In Vienna, they regularly appear at the Musikverein and in the Hofburg Chapel.

The beginnings of the choir can be traced to 1498, when Emperor Maximilian I. laid the foundation stone for the Viennese Court Music Orchestra - of which the Boys' Choir was a part. Today, the Court Music Orchestra consists of a choir comprising members of the Vienna Boys' Choir and members of the State Opera choir and orchestra.

Performances in the Hofburg Chapel and Musikverein

There are two regular performance series in Vienna which provide the opportunity to hear the Vienna Boys' Choir: as part of the Hofburg Chapel at the Holy Communions in the Hofburg Chapel (on Sundays from September to June) and at the Musikverein, where the Brahms Hall is the prestigious setting for their classical concerts (every Friday in April, May, June, September, October).

The Boys' Choir is also present at the Vienna State Opera, the Volksoper and at its own festival concerts. Its repertoire ranges from the Middle Ages to the present.

From 2012: Augarten Music Center

In their home in Vienna's second district, the new rehearsal and performance venue of the Vienna Boys' Choir is anticipated to be dedicated at the end of 2012 - above all for their children's operas: the Augarten Music Center, with a concert hall comprising around 380 seats. Generally speaking, it is also intended to be a music and theater center for children and young people. Cooperations are planned with the Vienna State Opera, the Konzerthaus and festivals.

The 100 or so Vienna Boys are between 10 and 14 years of age and organized into four concert choirs. The give about 300 concerts each year - in front of almost half a million spectators around the world.
