When the curtain falls at Vienna’s Volkstheater, nightlife rises at the Rote Bar on the upper floor. Just a stone’s throw from the Museum of Natural History, the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) and the MuseumsQuartier, the culture-vulture haunt – one of the city’s most exciting locations – puts on an après-show program beneath the dazzling chandeliers.
There is ambient music every evening, as well as gigs, clubbing events, readings and exhibitions at varying intervals. A small door to the left of the theater’s main entrance takes you up to the grand premises whose red curtains and new red bar were the logical inspiration for the establishment’s name...
The Red Room
is a stylish bar on the Ring boulevard, occupying the basement of the Comida, a restaurant long famed for its exquisite drinks list.
A sliding door opens out onto an expansive – almost patriotic – red and white décor. Red seating and textile wall coverings provide a futuristic contrast to the white tables, illuminated floors and prominent DJ deck. It churns out the very best of Black Music from 1968 to the present, accompanied by a choice of drinks and cocktails that leaves nothing to be desired. This has not escaped the notice of Vienna’s jet-set. Celebs such as Hubertus von Hohenlohe have already been spotted at the turntables – or at least at the sweeping bar...
