One of the most remarkable pavilions is Staud’s delicatessen where Johanna Staud has been selling jams and pickled vegetables since 1947. Her son Hans has sensitively revamped the Staud brand, making it synonymous with quality preserves. The refurbishment of the pavilion has made a significant contribution towards the effort. It is now larger, more modern and multifunctional. With just minimal effort the sales counter is transformed into a bar — and becomes a space for exhibitions , performances and festive gatherings .

Overall, the Yppenmarkt and Brunnenmarkt markets exude a certain Mediterranean flair , which is not surprising given the many Turkish market stalls and corresponding food and fashions on sale. A young creative scene and, of course, an exciting range of pubs and restaurants have also emerged in the district.

A classic is the  Restaurant Kent , whose traditional Turkish fare and large garden attracts not only card-playing Turks but also the young “in-crowd”. Café C.I. (Club International) on Yppenplatz itself is not only a convenient place to meet due to its spacious outdoor seating. It is also a local cultural centre for people of a diversity of origins. Students sit alongside street workers and artists alongside immigrants.

A new attraction at Brunnenmarkt is the so-called “Schaukasten” . This glass container is a mix of mini gallery, café and designer sausage stand. Its unique roof garden also makes it a viewing platform. It is the perfect place to watch the bustle in the market below over a good coffee...
