The Archeological Park can be reached conveniently and is located between Vienna and Bratislava; it includes the townships of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. It consists of three parts: the heart of it is the Petronell Open-Air Museum , on the grounds of an antique civilian city. In addition to ruins and reconstructions from Roman antiquity, a complete reconstruction of an old Roman family home has recently been added.
The Bad Deutsch-Altenburg Amphitheater is the only visible original part of the city around the former legion camp. The 100-year-old Carnuntinum Museum with its 3000 exhibits is the largest Roman museum in Austria. Built in the style of an ancient Roman country house, it is considered a treasure trove. The landmark of Carnuntum is the Heidentor (Heathen's Gate), a monument which was built for Emperor Constantius II (354 - 361 AD) and is today considered the most venerable Roman monument in Austria.
2000 Years of History
In 2006, Carnuntum celebrated its 2000th anniversary. The place where Emperor Marcus Aurelius set up headquarters during his campaign against the Germanic tribes at the end of the second century. In those days Carnuntum consisted of a legionary’s camp and the accompanying town, and had about 50,000 inhabitants.
The Archeological Park is of course also a splendid background for exciting
Roman feasts
. Under the motto "Bread and Games," performances include legionnaires performing in shining armor, seductive hetaeras, and expert old Roman craftsmen and tradesmen. The guests are served exquisite delicacies prepared from recipes handed down through centuries. And in the amphitheater are gladiator fights conducted according to the old customs with faithful copies of original armor.
