They were Austria’s most famous watercolourists: Jakob and Rudolf von Alt. Their works, which depict Austria in the 19th century, can be seen at the Albertina from February to May.

"Jakob and Rudolf von Alt. At the Emperor's command" is the title of the extensive exhibition. Emperor Ferdinand I. (1793-1875) commissioned father (Jakob Alt, 1789-1872) and son (Rudolf von Alt, 1812-1905) to create a "picture book" of the loveliest and most important areas and places in Vienna. The result was masterful watercolours, so-called "peep box pictures" , which give a faithfully detailed portrayal of the country and the life of the people. The focal points of the exhibition range from the presentation of prominent buildings and countryside delights to the depiction of life in the towns and cities.

Rudolf von Alt was one of the most popular artists of the 19th century in Vienna and was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession movement in 1897. Apart from his and Jakob Alt's works, the exhibition also includes pictures by Eduard Gurk and Leander Russ.
