Yellow Fog

Yellow Fog – light spectacle

The artist Olafur Eliasson has created a breathtaking light installation on the facade of the Verbund-Zentrale at the Am Hof square in the old city center. Every day at dusk this "intervention in the open space" surprises with a breathtaking play of light. .

Olafur Eliasson

Olafur Eliasson is one of the most renowned contemporary artists. His impressive work Yellow Fog - shown for the first time in New York in 1998 - is now on permanent display exclusively in Vienna – at the 48-meter-long facade of the Verbund-Gebäudes at the historic Am Hof square. Here the artwork can be seen for one hour every day at sundown.

Along the front of the building there is a grate in the sidewalk, under which are 32 fluorescent lamps. They immerse the fog, which after sundown rises up the facade every three minutes for a duration of 40 seconds, in yellow light. For an hour each day, the building gets a magical haze: fog, that spreads out over the sidewalk and the square.

Olafur Eliasson was born in 1967 in Copenhagen; he lives and works in Berlin and Copenhagen. He works mostly with physical phenomena, light, reflections, water, and movement. He caused a sensation with his "Green River" project (1998-2001), in which he changed the color of several rivers, as well as with his spectacular ice adornment for the BMW's 16th Art Car.

In conjunction with Eliasson's intervention, the Vertikale Galerie of the Verbund-Zentrale Werke will also show works by the American Fred Sandback, whose subtle thread sculptures hold a high place in Olafur Eliasson's esteem.
