More than 5000 exhibits offer some insight into the art of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries. The range of the international collection, which was installed during the 1990s, reaches from Art Informel to Viennese Actionism and the realistic tendencies of the 1970s, to the “New Painting” of the eighties, and to the style and media pluralism of the present time. Austrian art since 1945 is documented in an unparalleled way and put into an international context.
Several times a year, large special exhibitions are put on by international guest curators, permitting new and exciting insights into the collection.
The collection includes, among others, works by Arnulf Rainer, Sam Francis, Maria Lassnig, Antoni Tapiès, Hermann Nitsch, Günther Brus, Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz and VALIE EXPORT. Gerhard Richter, Siegfried Anzinger, Peter Kogler, Sean Scully, Per Kirkeby and Elke Krystufek are also represented.
Recently, the collection has been enlarged by photographs, videos and sculpture from such artists as Franz West, Nam June Paik, Shirin Neshat, Cindy Sherman and Jannis Kounellis.
