The collection of contemporary art belonging to Agnes and Karlheinz Essl has over 7,000 works and offers and incomparable insight into present-day art. The Essl collection is noted both for the married collectors' personal view of art as well as constant buying activity. Austrian painting from 1945 onwards forms the central core of the collection. Also represented are contemporary items from Europe, the USA, Australia, South America and Asia.
Collection overviews, monographic presentations, themed exhibitions, views of the collection by guest curators and the art of other cultures determine the exhibition program at the Essl Museum. The exhibition series entitled "emerging artists" and "ESSL ART AWARD CEE" present young art that is not yet established on the market.
The museum, which is financed entirely with private means, houses a café/restaurant with terrace, a bookshop, a freely accessible library as well as large depositories for the collection's works. An educational art program with guided tours and workshops for all ages rounds out the museum's offering.
