Lehár Schikaneder Villa

This grand villa, built in 1737 and reconstructed in the first half of the nineteenth century, is located in the Viennese Heurigen region of Nussdorf.

The baroque facade of the older part of the house - which used to be the front side, i.e. the showy side - now looks on a steeply descending large garden; the more recent part - today, the facade - has become an eye-catching sight between former vintners' houses and breweries.

From 1802 until 1812, Emanuel Schikaneder, librettist of "The Magic Flute," lived in the building, which still remains in private hands; from 1932 to 1944, the operetta composer Franz Lehár made his home in the villa: here he wrote his operetta "Giuditta," among other works. In the former salon in the second floor, autographs, paintings, photos and memorabilia of both musicians are exhibited.
