In the Footsteps of the Habsburgs

The Donnerbrunnen at the Neuer Markt

From Neuer Markt we take Plankengasse and Dorotheergasse (antique shops!) to the Church of the Augustinian Friars. This private church of the Habsburgs witnessed many weddings of the imperial family, such as the most famous one, of 16-year-old "Sissi" and Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854. This church also houses the burial vault of the hearts of the Habsburgs.

Crossing the square in front of the Albertina, whose world-renowned Collection of Graphic Art will be reopened in the spring of 2003, we enter the Burggarten, installed in 1818 for the imperial family. Here one finds monuments for Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine and Emperor Franz Joseph I - as well as an often-photographed statue of W.A. Mozart. The newly renovated Palm House is also worth a visit - these days, one can also dine there.
