Curtain Up This Fall
Mahler and more at the State Opera
The Vienna State Opera is Vienna's number one opera stage. At the end of September, it celebrates the first of six premieres in the 2022/23 season with the homage to Mahler, Von der Liebe Tod. The evening of musical theater conducted by Lorenzo Viotti combines two key works by Gustav Mahler. The early fairytale cantata by the 19 year-old, Das klagende Lied (1879/80), was followed by the late Kindertotenlieder (1901/04). (September 29 and October 2, 5, 7, 10 and 13, 2022; second series in May 2023)
The composer Gustav Mahler is a key figure for Vienna State Opera: He had a big impact on it in his ten years as court opera director (1897-1907) – indeed, he revolutionized the opera business. The present State Opera director, Bogdan Roščić, when asked about which musical moment of this season he is most looking forward to:
It's coming now in September. When Mahler's opus number 1, started by him as one of his unfinished opera projects, i.e. "Das klagende Lied", is performed in the Haus am Ring for the first time – as part of our Mahler homage "Von der Liebe Tod".
Another premiere that opera fans can look forward to: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Wagner's opera is on the program on December 4, 8, 11, 15, and 20, 2022; Philippe Jordan conducts and Keith Warner produces.
Theater an der Wien in the MuseumsQuartier
The Theater an der Wien welcomes its audiences for the 2022/23 season to the MuseumsQuartier | Hall E – the new performance venue while the historic opera house on Linke Wienzeile undergoes general refurbishment. This arrival in Vienna's cultural oasis will be celebrated from October 6 with a two-week opening program that makes a foray right through four decades of music history. Highlight: The premiere of Leoš Janáček's Das schlaue Füchslein, also the directorial debut of the Theater an der Wien artistic director, Stefan Herheim.
During the open day on October 16, short concerts, workshops, and musical pop-ups lead audiences into the world of music, theater, and musical theater. They can experience contributors to the opening productions, including the Arnold Schoenberg Choir as well as musicians of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Wiener Symphoniker. This day is crowned with a musical firecracker: The Baroque festival opera La lotta d’Ercole con Acheloo by Agostino Steffani with the Bach Consort Wien under Rubén Dubrovsky.
Countess, Nutcracker, and Ganoven at the Vienna Volksoper
The first premiere of this season at the Vienna Volksoper (whose new façade is also bathed in the color tone Rosa cyclam 5 ) was celebrated on September 3, 2022: Carl Millöcker's operetta Die Dubarry from 1879, in a version by Theo Mackebens from the 1920s. Die Dubarry tells in biographical sections about the social ascent of working girl Jeanne Beçu to become the prosperous mistress of Louis XV, and still throws up very topical questions: What losses did she experience on the way up and to what extent was she corrupted by it? Annette Dasch shines in the lead role. (A further ten performances until October 19, 2022)
Musical theater for the whole family (aged six years and up) continues with the premiere on October 8, 2022: Iolanthe and the Nutcracker. The evening combines Tchaikovsky's two masterpieces of the same name. (A further 14 performances until December 18, 2022)
On November 25, 2022, it's curtain up for the first time for Bert Brecht's (text) and Kurt Weill's (music) Threepenny Opera, loosely based on the motto: He who cheats best, wins. (A further 12 performances until January 23, 2023)
New musicals: Rebecca and Hunchback
Musical fans will find lots that's new this autumn. The highlight is probably the Austrian premiere of Disney’s "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". The musical based on the novel by Victor Hugo and the world-famous Disney film starts its run at the Ronacher on October 8, 2022. The story about Quasimodo and the beautiful Esmeralda touches audiences young and old. All Disney songs from the film also feature in the musical.
The legendary musical Rebecca provides exciting evenings in a new production at the Raimund Theater from September 22, 2022. – A superb British thriller, also turned into a movie by Hitchcock, and most recently shown on Netflix. One of the stars in the cast is Mark Seibert. The story: The new Lady de Winter asserts herself against the overpowering presence of her husband's first wife and reveals her terrifying secret.
