City rankings: first place for Vienna
Artful and exquisite with profound musical and intellectual roots, Vienna captivates visitors with its extraordinary cultural offers – for the editors at Condé Nast Traveler, this is what inspired high praise for Austria’s capital. A total of 429,000 readers of the US travel magazine specializing in luxury tourism and lifestyle voted for their favorite destinations, hotels and sights worldwide in the Readers’ Choice Awards. After London and Paris topped the rankings of the “best cities in Europe” for many years, Vienna received first prize in 2018, as it did in 2017.
“Condé Nast Traveler isn’t just read in the US, which is Vienna’s most significant foreign market, but is considered one of the most prestigious industry publications worldwide. The current ranking is an impressive benchmark that also reinforces the Vienna Tourist Board’s activities and messages, which aim to inspire luxury-oriented and free-spending target groups to visit Vienna,” said Norbert Kettner, director of the Tourist Board at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin.
Vienna also world’s smartest city
Vienna also takes first place again in the “Smart City Strategy Index 2019”, created by the international consulting firm Roland Berger. The index ranks the digitization concepts of 153 cities. The projects that made a particularly impression in Vienna were in the areas of environment, mobility, education, health and administration. Vienna placed ahead of London and St. Albert in Canada in the ranking.
