The new cake cafés

Gone are the times when baking was considered uncool. Nowadays, little cake shops are opening in many corners of Vienna, where mostly people from the creative scene are making the transition to selling their homemade cakes, cupcakes, tarts and brownies. These cake shops do not see themselves as being in competition with the high pastry art of Viennese cuisine, but are much more focused on the charm of the homemade product.

"Fett+Zucker" is one such example. The charming cake shop is located in the vicinity of the Karmelitermarkt. Retro furniture from the flea market lends a living room atmosphere, the apple crumble cake and banana bread - baked by a former architect - have a loyal fanbase.

The Guerilla Bakery was originally a real guerrilla project by three sisters, then became a pop-up concept and finally got its own permanent premises in January 2016. The attractive little café appears bright and friendly. Apart from great cakes and tarts, there are also casseroles, quiches, sandwiches at lunchtime as well as a fine breakfast offering.

French flair in Vienna

With homemade French pastries and Viennoiserie, Tart’a tata inspires pure indulgence. The glass case dazzles with artfully decorated desserts, tarts, eclairs, macaroons, croissants and much more, making it very hard to decide.

Similarly, the sweet creations at Crème de la Crème are almost too good to eat. The enchanting and tastefully furnished café offers typical treats from Austria and France: Pralines, pies, mousses, tarts, braided pastries, sweet rolls and cream slices are just a few examples.

The seductive offering at "Rori's Finest Sweets" in the 5th district ranges from macaroons to small cakes to éclairs. The focus is on patisserie from France. The pale blue and white ambiance creates a cozy, nostalgic atmosphere.

Viola is also a small, pretty establishment with sensational patisserie items ranging from éclairs to cream slices and classic plum cake as well as the reinterpretation of traditional desserts. Run as a bistro, the place also serves small dishes such as quiches, strudel and salads for quick snacks on the go.

Ella's Twins on Vorgartenmarkt also offers a mix of traditional and modern patisserie and chocolaterie to nibble on. The sweet temptations range from Punschkrapferl (rum-flavored pastry) to fresh and fruity maracuja-chocolate slices.

And those who would like a cake just like grandma made it at home will be delighted at Vollpension. Here you can find actual grandmothers at the oven, baking cakes and tarts that are familiar from childhood.
