Vienna Independent Shorts

"Fear is not an option" is this year's the slogan for Austria's biggest short film festival, which also had a special honor bestowed on it this year: its inclusion on the list of the Oscar® Qualifying Festivals. The Vienna Independent Shorts show films, each with a maximum length of 30 minutes, in seven curated programs that deal with systemic crises, home-made catastrophes, the striving for freedom and the hope for a better life. In total, over 300 films can be seen at the festival movie theaters. The winning films of the four competition categories will be automatically added to the long list for the Oscars®.

Live: New York rap icon Zebra Katz

Another highlight will be the live performance by New York rap icon Zebra Katz. The artistic alter ego of the American rapper Ojay Morgan performs live at the Metro Kinokulturhaus on 28 May. The music video "Nu Renegade", filmed for Zebra Katz by the Austrian director Flordian Pochlatko, can also be seen in the national music video competition at the Vienna Independent Shorts. To mark his 70th birthday, homage will be paid to the world-famous animated movie maker Bill Plympton, who is also set to travel to the Vienna Independent Shorts in person.

"The Rhythm of Vienna" short film competition

VIS Vienna Independent Shorts and the Vienna Tourist Board have also created a short film competition on the topic of "The Rhythm of Vienna" this year. The winning films of the competition can be watched from September 2016 at shortfilm.vienna.info.
