Musicians’ graves at the Central Cemetery

You are here:

Even more Beethoven

Triumphal Beethoven premieres were held all over Vienna: in the Eroica Hall of the Austrian Theater Museum, in the Grand Redouten Hall of the Spanish Riding School and in the Festival Hall of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The Theater an der Wien was the stage for the premiere of the opera "Fidelio", and Beethoven even lived there for a while.

In Beethoven Park opposite the Wiener Konzerthaus, you will find two bronze Beethoven depictions at once: Caspar Zumbusch's sculpture erected in 1880 and the colorful, contemporary monument by Markus Lüpertz from 2017.

Another Beethoven memorial worth seeing can be found in Heiligenstädter Park. It was donated by the Vienna Men's Choral Society in 1910 and shows the composer as a walker, who – after visiting the former spa complex here – would go on long walks in this area.

Beethoven grave & Beethoven heuriger

When Beethoven died on March 26, 1827, he was so famous that almost 20,000 people – almost ten percent of Vienna's population – turned up for his funeral at Währing Cemetery. Sixty years later, the mortal remains of the musical genius were reburied in a grave of honor at Vienna Central Cemetery, which continues to be visited by large numbers of Beethoven fans.

After a visit to the Beethoven Museum, those who want to supplement their search for traces of Beethoven in culinary terms should drop by the heuriger Mayer am Pfarrplatz, located in an atmospheric house that Beethoven lived in for a while in 1817. Or pay a visit to "Ludwig van". The restaurant, which serves traditional Austrian cuisine, is housed in a now heritage-listed building. Beethoven once lived in an old apartment overlooking the courtyard here, working on the "Missa solemnis", his "Ninth", and other works.
