Screen of the Music Film Festival at City Hall at night

Music Film Festival at City Hall Square

The Music Film Festival at City Hall Square is one of the most enticing offers in Vienna during the summer. Something to suit every taste is also offered by the 25 or so international leading gastronomers on site as well as by the music film program, which covers every genre and is shown on the giant open-air screen.

Music follows football

This year, the Music Film Festival starts on 14 July, four days after the public screening of UEFA Euro 2016, which turns City Hall Square into a hotspot from 10 June to 10 July 2016 - and not only for football fans. The games of the European Championship will be shown at this fan arena on the 100 m² LED screen. The food and drink will also pamper guests during the European Championship. And on the eight non-match days during the European Championship, pop concerts by Die Toten Hosen, Queen, Falco, Die Fantastischen Vier (Fanta4) and others will be shown - as a warm-up for the Music Film Festival.

The program of this year’s Music Film Festival makes special mention of the unforgettable musician and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who passed away recently, and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

It will be possible to watch recordings from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on a number of evenings. Productions by noteworthy orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Wiener Symphoniker and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra will also be shown. Unforgettable moments from the Waldbühne amphitheater in Berlin will also flicker across the giant screen.

Netrebko to Iggy Pop

Visitors can look forward to concert recordings with stars such as Lang Lang, Juan Diego Flórez, Plácido Domingo, Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann. But fans of opera and classical music aren't the only ones to get their money's worth. James Blunt, Iggy Pop, Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, Placebo and Iggy Pop deliver modern tones from Jazz to Rock.

A tip for jazz fans: The Jazz Frühschoppen on seven Sundays, at which Viennese jazz bands perform live and for free at lunchtime.
