Vienna State Opera

Vienna State Ballet

Thanks to director Manuel Legris, a former Danseur Etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, the Vienna State Ballet has succeeded in establishing itself internationally as a first-class company. Three premieres, one gala and ten repertoire works are on the program at the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper in the 2017/18 season. The hundred or so dancers present their abilities in 87 performances. A total of about 150,000 people are expected to attend.

Highlights at the Vienna State Opera

  • The ballet evening MacMillan | McGregor | Ashton celebrates its premiere on 31 October 2017 – entirely dedicated to British choreography.
  • The narrative ballet Peer Gynt is by choreographer Edward Clug. It is based on the music of Edvard Grieg and the play by Henrik Ibsen (premiere at the Vienna State Opera on 21 January 2018).
  • For the season finale, the annual Nureyev Gala presents highlights from the international world of ballet on 29 June 2018.
  • Six programs from the repertoire will also be danced, including the full-length narrative ballets Giselle, Raymonda and The Nutcracker.

Highlights at the Volksoper

  • A major dance premiere on 9 December 2017 is Roméo et Juliette. Choreographer Davide Bombana created the commissioned piece for the Vienna State Ballet to music by Hector Berlioz and based on William Shakespeare's tragedy.
  • Another Shakespeare work is part of the repertoire; A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Jorma Elo.
  • Marie Antoinette (choreography: Patrick de Bana) and Cendrillon (Cinderella; choreography: Thierry Malandain) are on the program again.
