Vienna State Ballet

Thanks to director Manuel Legris, a former Danseur Etoile of the Paris Opera Ballet, the Vienna State Ballet has succeeded in establishing itself as a first-class company on the world stage. Four premieres, one gala and ten repertoire works are on the program at the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper in the 2019/20 season, which is also the Legris' last season as director of the State Ballet. The hundred or so dancers present their abilities in around 80 performances. A total of about 150,000 people are expected to attend.

Highlights at the State Opera

  • Jewels – set to music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky – was considered to be the first full-length "abstract ballet" by George Balanchines at its world premiere in 1967 in New York. Premiere: November 2, 2019
  • Lukács | Lidberg | Duato is an evening with three pieces – Movements to Stravinsky by Andras Lukács, White Darkness by Nacho Duato, and Between Dogs and Wolves by Pontus Lidberg, a commissioned work of the State Opera that has its world premiere on this evening. Three entirely individual, choreographic approaches. Premiere: March 4, 2020
  • The Nureyev Gala at the end of the season (June 25, 2020) has become a permanent ballet fixture for many Viennese and regularly brings guests from Austria and abroad to the Vienna State Opera
  • also in the repertoire: Sylvia, Forsythe | Van Manen | Kylián, Peer Gynt, Le Corsaire, Onegin, MacMillan | McGregor | Asthon as well as a ballet homage with choreography by William Forsythe, Natalia Horecna and Harald Lander

Highlights at the Volksoper

  • No fewer than twelve dancers embody the role of the unforgettable chansonnière in Mauro Bigonzetti's homage La Piaf. With – what else? – chansons by Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel as well as with music by Fauré, Massenet, Milhaud, Poulenc, Ravel and Satie. Premiere: March 28, 2020
  • In the final premiere of Manuel Legris, the production Apassionato – Bach und Vivaldi presents the works of three choreographical talents to have emerged from the Vienna State Ballet: Boris Nebyla, Eno Peci, and Martin Winter. A bridge linking the commonalities and differences between Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach. Premiere: June 5, 2020
  • also in the repertoire: the revival of Carmina Burana, Peter Pan, and Coppélia or The Girl with the Enamel Eyes
