International Accordion Festival

The event has been cancelled.

Whether concertina, squeeze box, accordion or hand organ – the accordion is a real all-rounder. It combines melody and rhythms like no other instrument and can therefore also get by very well without the accompaniment of other musical instruments. However, in an orchestra, the instrument creates a sense of pure fascination.

This can be experienced up close at the annual Accordion Festival, which this year runs from February 22 to March 22 under the motto "Vive la France". The festival kicks of with the two exceptional accordionists Otto Lechner and Arnaud Methivier, who have a musical rendezvous, for the first time together with two violinists. Another highlight is the music of the group Papiers D’Arménies from France: original compositions and traditional songs merge artfully into a whole new "imaginary folklore". Other highlights include the Argentinian duo Lerner y Moguilevsky, the Peter Havlicek trio with Toni Kainrath and the band Bibič/Lechner/Schuberth/Popržan, which celebrates the spirit of cross-genre and cross-border musical cooperations.

World musicians, newcomers and silent movie matinées

The world music Dobrek Project will make its debut at Theater Akzent on February 24. Singer Agnes Palmisano demonstrates her vocal flexibility between Viennese and Klezmer music, both with her trio and with the band Klezmer Reloaded. The up-and-coming newcomers include the rousing Styrian trio Sturm & Klang and the five-member band from Lapland Jaakko Laitinen & Väärä Raha. On March 20, Attwenger finally open the closing gala. One day later, the Playbackdolls and Lucas Warford and Wilo Sertain from Three for Silver perform the finest of world music at a double concert. And on March 22, the 21st Accordion Festival finally says farewell with Riccardo Tesi and Banditaliana at the Wiener Metropol.

As usual on the Sundays during the festival, there are silent movie matinées as well as the accordion workshops in collaboration with the Österreichisches Volksliedwerk, the Austrian folk music association. The Accordion Festival Lounge is held on Saturdays at Café Mocca, hosted by the musician Franziska Hatz.
