In London in the 1790s—far removed from his earlier, sedentary life—Haydn suddenly found himself at the center of cultural life and experienced a period of artistic and personal flourishing. Letters to his ladies-in-waiting bear witness to deep affection—and are reflected in symphonies and arias full of warmth, drama, and exuberant joie de vivre.
