mumok Sounds & Visions
About the Event
Experience a sound journey that allows you to experience mumok as an acoustic and architectural space of resonance.
Sounds & Visions is a performative sound journey that allows visitors to experience mumok as an acoustic and architectural resonance space. The building’s lava basalt façade serves as the world’s largest lithophone and is played live by Umberto Gollini feat. Jimmy Zurek. Their performance activates the façade as a sonic threshold between public urban space and the museum.
Building on this, sound and voice interventions by Oliver Hangl unfold inside the building—such as recorded Eurovision song lyrics in the elevators. Visitors move through the building by walking, waiting, and lingering, experiencing sound as a continuous interplay between architecture, movement, and performance.
The journey ends in the ground-floor cinema, which serves as a temporary space for collection and concentration. There, a curated film and video program from the mumok collection is shown.

Sounds & Visions conceives of mumok not as a neutral exhibition space, but as an activated instrument whose architecture and circulation become visible and audible through sound and performance.

Live sound performance, a concert-style presentation on the exterior and interior facades of mumok, which together form the world’s largest lithophone

Song contexts in the elevator (lyrics from Eurovision Song Contest songs performed live in the three elevators in their original languages)
Eurovision earworms: Acoustic guerrilla intervention in the exhibitions. Following a precise action plan, activists flood rooms at mumok, humming, whistling, or singing a melody that soon becomes an endless acoustic loop in the minds of the accidental listeners.
