Man preparing coffee

Coffee the really modern way

The new coffee shops are quite different from the typical Viennese variety. In a modern ambience, everything revolves around the origins and roasting of the coffee beans and the perfect method for preparing coffee. The trend is often also described as the Third Wave coffee culture.

A hot tip for coffee aficionados is Praterstrasse in the 2nd district. This is where the Tyrolean restaurateur Otto Bayer has opened his pretty coffee bar Balthasar. He prepares the terrific coffee with an iconic Marzocco espresso machine. Supersense, a few blocks down, is also one of the best cafés in the new style and is also worth a visit for its coffee.

Kaffemik is a project set up by a couple of IT experts in the trendy 7th district. Coffee from alternating guest roast houses and even filter coffee are available in this purist establishment. Tobias Radinger's Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstrasse in the 4th district also has a demure ambience. What's special about this place is that it roasts its own coffee. Visually completely different is the Wiener Rösthaus. Surrounded by the flair of a store selling colonial goods, it offers great coffee, which is even roasted right on the premises.

At the Jonas Reindl coffee shop next to Schottentor, coffee is offered from the fantastic Viennese roast house Süssmund. Here as well, much emphasis is placed on the preparation methods - and on design. Nikolaus Hartmann, operator of the Süssmund micro-roasthouse, has now also opened his own coffee bar. One of the best coffees in the city is served in the bright and pretty ambience of the Süssmund Coffee Bar. Naturally, the company's own roasts can also be purchased here.

And when it comes to coffee, CaffèCouture obviously has to be on the list. It is the brainchild of Georg Branny, a prize-winning barista who is also known for his coffee cocktails. He presents his visions at two locations: in Palais Ferstel in the 1st district, and in the 9th district including showroom and roast house.
