An increasing number of consumers value sustainability, ethics, quality and indulgence in equal measures when it comes to food. This is why Vienna also has a restaurant scene that uses products derived from ecologically correct agriculture and humane animal keeping.
In Vienna, organic and health food stores can be found particularly in the young and creative districts, as well as at Vienna's markets. The spectrum of organic restaurants is diverse and colorful. Tewa offers organic cuisine with international influences at the Naschmarkt and, as of recently, also at the Karmelitermarkt.
In the light, friendly ambience of the Health Kitchen, low-carb cuisine is cooked with regional and mostly organic ingredients. This is how good healthy food can taste: Salads with that something extra, soups and stews are on the menu, as are rice paper rolls – with a range of fillings such as pulled beef or goat's cheese and apple. Another tip is the breakfast.
The high-quality vegetarian dishes at the gourmet restaurant Lebenbauer are mostly organic. Similarly, the restaurant Wrenkh was originally known for its sophisticated vegetarian cuisine. Now it also lists meat and fish on the menu, which is mostly organic as well.
Fans of meat-free food will be delighted at yamm! The stylish restaurant offers vegetarian cuisine from around the world, including vegan, gluten or lactose free options. From Italian to Indian, from breakfast to dinner. The food is superb and incorporates local, mostly organic products. For a little snack on the go, Limoni’s offers sandwiches, soups and salads with mainly organic ingredients. This is where the latest harvest from Austria’s farms and gardens is processed.
Of particular note are the restaurants whose organic selections have also been officially certified. At Dreiklang, the cuisine has been organic, wholesome and prepared without genetically modified ingredients since 1991. The menus change weekly and even the electricity is green. Naturkost St. Josef in the 7th district was one of the early pioneers of organic food and has been serving a daily rotation of lunch menus for several years - all organic and vegetarian.
There are also organic in-places: The minimalist bistro run by the trendy baker Joseph resembles a canteen in its design and places an emphasis on organic ingredients and a wide variety of bread-based dishes. Of course you can buy the renowned organic, handmade “Joseph” bread here, along with wonderful patisserie and exclusive fine foods. Everything is organic in the modern heuriger buffet Zum geschupftn Ferdl, too – from “Brettljause” dishes to the wine itself.
The restaurant Cristina Rojik – die Bio-Wirtin in the city center is 100 percent organic. Everything here - from Wiener Schnitzel to risotto - is of excellent organic quality. Gustl Kocht, which sees itself as a restaurant for everyone and a particularly child-friendly at that, is also fully certified and puts the emphasis on home cooking. Apart from Austrian dishes, there are also specialties from Poland, Hungary, Romania and Russia on the menu.
Two modern delis are also fully organically certified: Deli Bluem offers great organic and purely plant-based cuisine at two locations. At Bio Deli, there are salads, soups, pasta and stews for a quick meal.
