Six cozy heuriger taverns where you can enjoy Viennese wine

In these places the world is at peace. You can sit outside in the shade or in pure nature high up on the vineyard. The Viennese show their most sociable side at the heuriger. Everyday worries are left behind. You sit together, drink wine, enjoy delicious food and sometimes even sing old Viennese tavern songs and play “Schrammel” music. Even Ludwig van Beethoven himself enjoyed the idyllic setting of Vienna’s heuriger when he worked on his music.

Originally the term “heuriger” referred to this year’s wine. Over time, it came to be known as a place where winemakers were permitted to serve their own fresh wines. The wine tasting is topped off by many savory delicacies from Viennese cuisine. Here we list six cozy heuriger where you can enjoy Vienna’s wine.

Heuriger Bernreiter

Five generations of the Bernreiter family have managed this heuriger in the heart of Jedlersdorf north of the Danube. The large, shady garden is a great place to share a glass or two of wine with friends and family. Those who can’t resist the tempting scent of roast pork, fried chicken and other delicacies drifting over from nearby tables can also savor the dishes from the heuriger’s buffet. The ingredients for the numerous wonderful treats come from regional producers.

Wine tavern Wieninger am Nussberg

Although we’re not far from the city’s hustle and bustle, up here on the Nussberg it still feels like another world. Vienna is at our feet and unusually tranquil as we enjoy a short break directly in the green vineyard. It gets even better when the excellent wine comes. The cuisine at the Wieninger wine tavern is a blend of tradition and innovation. The high-quality regional ingredients turn typical heuriger classics into new, sophisticated creations.

Heuriger Edlmoser

The Edlmoser vineyard operates one of Vienna’s oldest heuriger. Guests can get cozy at the winegrower’s house from 1629 or one of Vienna’s most beautiful dining gardens. Of course the nice weather makes it easy for us to choose. We enjoy our short break with a refreshing wine spritzer and look forward to the delicious food. Based on old family recipes, the finest ingredients are combined into the popular classics of Viennese cuisine. Don’t forget to save room for some cream cheese strudel!

Zum Gschupftn Ferdl

Unfortunately this very modern heuriger in the city center has permanently closed.

Christ Vineyards

With Rainer Christ, the Christ Vineyards have one of the most creative, youngest winemakers in Vienna. Tradition and modernism intersect in many places here – whether in their own vineyards or at the heuriger, which lets its guests choose between modern or traditionally designed spaces. Christ Vineyards also offers a high-class heuriger buffet to accompany the excellent wines. Even with its modern features, the family operation has always retained its special charm.

Mayer on Pfarrplatz

Mayer vineyards on Pfarrplatz have stood for superior Viennese wine since 1683. This tradition is still alive and well at the vineyard’s own heuriger. We’re happy to linger in this dining garden, one of the coziest in Vienna, and sample the lavish heuriger buffet. It includes a wide range of spreads, classic warm dishes and fabulous pastries. Many things here are a reminder of the vineyard’s most famous guest. Ludwig van Beethoven lived here in 1817, in what was Heiligenstadt at the time, and worked on compositions such as his world-famous 9th Symphony.

Mayer on Nussberg

Another part of the Mayer vineyard takes us back to the Nussberg. If you’re delighted by Mayer’s offers on Pfarrplatz and would like to get away from the city, you will be in good hands at the wine tavern in the middle of the vineyard. This is how easy and pleasant a trip to the countryside can be. Award-winning wines, a substantial heuriger buffet and one of the best views of Vienna are certainly a worthy finale to our tour of Vienna’s heuriger and wine taverns.
