It's time to let Loos again
If you think that the public has long known about all the retained works of Adolf Loos, the architect of the century, then you'd be wrong. The latest rediscovery is the interior realized in 1905 for the apartment of the banker and industrialist Alfred Kraus. Kraus was the brother of the influential Austrian publicist Karl Kraus. The interior furnishings designed by Loos for Mohsgasse in Vienna were said to have been totally destroyed. But the main room, which today serves as a discussion room for a firm of attorneys, is retained true to the original. A minor sensation, not just for fans of the pioneer of Modernism.
During the event series Loos2021, which is organized by the association Architekturerbe Österreich, there will be an opportunity to discover the Loos interior on Mohsgasse and many other works of the visionary thinker in the form of guided tours. The extraordinary architecture dates can be booked on the website of the event series.
Eleven Loos sites throughout Vienna
A total of eleven works by Loos are waiting to be discovered throughout Vienna during Loos2021. They include apartments, villas, estate houses and commercial properties that are actually not, or only very rarely, accessible to the general public. The Löwenbach apartment, near the Urania in the 1st district, is also on the program, as is the Manz bookshop designed by Loos, as well as the Knize tailor's salon and the Friedrich Boskovits II apartment, which now houses the music collection of the Vienna Library.
If you are interested in buildings designed by Loos, you’ll get your money's worth in the form of the Scheu and Steiner houses in the 13th district and the Duschnitz house in the 19th district. One of the semi-detached houses designed by Loos for the Vienna Werkbund Estate can also be visited. Also very worth seeing: The estate house at Heuberg in the 17th district, which recently underwent very careful general refurbishment. Another part of Loos 2021 is the most famous building designed by Loos: The once scandalous house on Michaelerplatz in Vienna city center.
The Hofmobiliendepot. Imperial Furniture Collection focuses on furniture designs by Adolf Loos from September 25, 2020. The show organized during Vienna Design Week is entitled "Loos – Design & Redesign" and questions the relevance of Loos's designs for contemporary Austrian designers. Current design positions by designers such as breadedEscalope, Martin Möstböck, and Patrick Rampelotto are presented in the form of a specially conceived design island. The Loos originals can be seen in the permanent collection of the Hofmobiliendepot. Imperial Furniture Collection.
