Viennese cultural highlights in summer
The museums were closed for a few weeks because of the coronavirus crisis. Now they're open again and looking forward to lots of visitors over the summer. As a special "welcome back" offer, there is a special summer Federal Museums Card, which costs €19 instead of €59 until September 15, 2020. It entitles the holder to make one visit to all eight Federal Museums. The promotional card can be purchased directly in the museums or online at www.bundesmuseencard.at.
All Vienna is a stage
Each week from Thursday to Sunday, Vienna's Kultursommer 2020 presents the full range of the cultural landscape: music from pop to classical, dance and performance, theater, readings, cabaret, new circus, character and object theater, as well as migrant art. Two acts perform on each stage each evening. Some locations also offer children's and youth theater during the daytime. Each venue will have a maximum number of visitors to ensure that audiences are able to socially distance. 2,000 artists will give 800 performances at 25 locations. The two largest – and covered – stages of Vienna's Kultursommer are located on Danube Island (for 500 visitors) and on Laaer Berg (for 300 visitors).
Open-air stages
Theater will be performed outdoors more often than usual this year – on Vienna's summer stages: open-air performances are offered by venues like the Marionette Theater at Schönbrunn Palace, the Pawlatschenbühne of the Wiener Metropol, and the new Theater im Park at the Belvedere, which is operated by Michael Niavarani and Georg Hoanzl. The setting for this theater is the beautiful, 2-hectare private garden of the Princely Schwarzenberg Family Foundation. A temporary, transparent open-air stage stands between two mighty sycamore trees. Opposite is a Baroque grotto, where an open-air theater was planned centuries ago. An indoor tip for enjoying culture in summer is the legendary Theater am Spittelberg.
Music Film Festival on City Hall Square
Until September 6, Vienna City Hall Square is once again a popular open-air meeting place for night owls and music lovers – due to coronavirus #soWIENie (#VIENNAlikeneverbefore): with separate cinema and dining areas. "Please reserve" is the motto, admission to the Music Film Festival is free!
Danube Island Festival
The longest Danube Island Festival ever is on until September 20. The #dif20 tour bus stops in all of Vienna's 23 districts on its 80-day summer tour – with 100 acts by Austrian artists. For the grand finale, there will be three shows on the Danube Island festival stage.
