Kaiserwasser

Natural bathing spots in Vienna

One of Vienna’s most beautiful natural bathing spots - in the immediate vicinity of Danube City - is the Kaiserwasser. This side arm of the Old Danube impresses not only as a wild bathing spot but some of the trees have been declared natural monuments. The Old Danube itself should also be mentioned, of course: The bathing paradise is just seven subway stations from the center of Vienna and is a great place to swim, sail and enjoy.

Numerous bathing points by natural bodies of water are located along the Mühlwasser in Donaustadt. And by the Schillerwasser as well, there are numerous possibilities to bathe on kilometers of reed-covered banks in untouched nature.

In the Upper Lobau, there are also some areas that have been approved for bathing: The relaxed Dechantlacke offers lots of peace, a fact appreciated by the painter and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. At the Panozzalacke, the “Knusperhäuschen” offers pretzel sticks and a spicy cheese spread called Liptauer. The shallow body of water is ideal for family bathing excursions. As is the Hirschstetten bathing pond, which attracts a young crowd with its special zone for infants.

Those who enjoy messing about in boats should visit the Heustadlwasser lake in the Green Prater. It is a natural remnant of the original Danube canal. At Rogetzer boat rentals, you can either rent a pedal boat or buy a small snack and refresh the soul on the waterside. NOTE: Swimming is not allowed here, but there's nothing to stop you getting your feet wet! The Rosenwasser, a small side arm of the Heustadlwasser, can be used as a natural bathing spot.

Tip:

A bathing excursion in nature can be ideally combined with a hike or bicycle tour. All bathing spots in the Lobau can be reached on foot or by bicycle. The routes are well signed and can also be found on the hiking map, which is available free of charge in the nationalparkhaus wien-lobAU.

Important notes about Vienna’s natural bathing spots:

  • The water quality is regularly checked.
  • There is no lifeguard.
  • Admission is free, of course.
  • In principle, the aim is to show consideration for the habitats of the animals and plants.
