Artist and Model
In autumn 2020, the Albertina has a new exhibition format: in the show "Artist and Model", it brings together the familiar and the obscure on this topic from its incredibly rich treasures. Portraits (Rubens's daughter Clara Serena) are included, as are self-portraits (Käthe Kollwitz) and anonymous nudes (such as those by Michelangelo, Klimt, and Schiele).
It is a powerful synopsis: 100 masterpieces from six centuries. All revolve around the artist and his model. The onlooker is offered a combination of dialog and drama: the artist appears as anatomist, reporter or charmer, as story-teller full of ideas or as incorruptible historian, as philosopher and psychologist, also as a mirror of himself, as secret voyeur or as sharp-tongued cynic.
The protagonists of the show are the greats of art history: Dürer and Michelangelo, Rubens and Boucher, Klimt and Schiele, Wurm and Dumas. There are also many new artists to discover.
Nature and Ideal
The exhibition shows how the artistic image of the human being comes about in the intellectual debate with what is seen: in the field of tension between naturalness and idealization, between realism, interpretation, and abstraction.
Many of the most splendid artworks in existence make it possible to experience how the analytical eye of the artist spurs his inspiration and the implementing hand becomes the tool of the mind.
