Vienna's museums awake

Vienna's landscape of museums and art is one of the most diverse in the world. Especially in times of crisis, art lets us dive into other worlds. The virtual offering of art is large, but it doesn't replace an actual visit to the museum. Which is why we're so happy that we'll soon be able to experience our favorite works in the flesh again.

Security guidelines are associated with the reopening. When visiting the institutions it is compulsory to wear a mouth and nose mask. In addition, ten square metres must be available per guest, but calculated on the total area of the sights. This means that more than one person per ten square metres may stay in individual rooms, provided that the safety distance of one metre can be maintained. Art education programmes such as guided tours and workshops are also permitted. Up to ten people may take part.

Here is an overview of the openings announced so far (as at May 25, 2020):

May 2020

  • Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna (May 20, 2020) – The Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna is opening some of its exhibits (the upper floor remains closed) for the discounted admission price of €7 instead of €12 (normal price). The museum is open as usual from 9.00 am to 6.30 pm, but is not open on Wednesday evenings. 
  • Albertina modern (May 27, 2020) – A new museum of contemporary art enriches Vienna's museum landscape. The Albertina modern opens its doors and show us Austrian art from 1945 to 1980 with "In the Beginning".
  • Künstlerhaus Wien (May 27, 2020) – The freshly renovated Künstlerhaus shines in new splendor. The opening exhibition "Alles war klar" ("Everything was clear") will be extended until October 2020.
  • Leopold Museum (May 27, 2020) – At the end of May the exhibition "Hundertwasser - Schiele" can be visited again. By the way: The first 100 visitors receive free admission and a goody bag with surprises.
  • Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (May 30, 2020) – There's a special campaign on at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna from the end of May until the end of June. In accordance with the "pay as you wish" principle, visitors can decide how much they'd like to pay for their admission.
  • Museum of Technology (May 30, 2020) –  The museum is open every Saturday, Sunday or public holiday from 30.5. to 30.6.2020. From 1.7. to 31.8.2020 you can again experience technical achievements daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
  • Kunst Haus Wien (May 31, 2020) – Still on view until mid August "Alec Soth - Photography is a language"
  • Mozarthaus Vienna (May 31, 2020) – The Mozarthaus Vienna also has a new special exhibition. In "The Triad of the first Viennese School", everything revolves around Mozart, Haydn and of course Beethoven, who will receive a great deal of attention in the music year 2020.

June 2020

  • Belvedere 21 (June 1, 2020) – Nature dominates the work of Herbert Brandl. Belvedere 21 presents his oeuvre with a focus on the last twenty years. The exhibition "Exposed to Painting" has been extended to October 26, 2020.
  • The Third Man Museum (June 13, 2020) – The Third Man Museum has designed a new special exhibition "Vienna 1945 - Zero Hour". 75 years after the end of the Second World War, the exhibition focuses on Vienna directly before and after the end of the war in 1945. From 13 June 2020.
