Maria Lassnig and the Body
The work produced by the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) focuses on profound sensations. The visualization of physical emotions and the tracing of body perception form the core of her body awareness work. Three years after her death, the Albertina honors Maria Lassnig with a retrospective of her graphic work and brings together around 100 of the artist's best hand drawings. Previously completely unknown pieces turn out to be key works in this show. Together with more familiar drawings, they cast new light of Lassnig's concept of body awareness and open up new insights into the Austrian’s diverse oeuvre.
Lassnig was one of the most important artists of the 20th century and made her own body the focus of her work at an early stage. She captured her self-perception and sense of self on paper with humor and seriousness, with yearning and ruthlessness. It wasn't what she saw but what she felt that became the picture.
