Rinko Kawauchi in portrait - Woman’s head from behind

Japanese master photographs

The exhibition covers several workgroups from across a period of ten years, including the recently created cycle "Search for the Sun", which Kawauchi photographed specially in Austria for this exhibition – amongst other things with motifs from the glaciated world of the Dachstein and from a gold smelter in Vienna.

Experts emphasize the photographer’s mastery of composition, nuanced coloring and her attention to random details. The artist, who was born in Shiga (Japan) in 1972, embarked on her international career in 2001 with the publication of three photo books, an extremely important medium for photographers in Japan. In the supporting program to the exhibition, the leading Viennese photographer Andreas H. Bitesnich organizes a themed evening on Japanese photo books (15 April).
