In Dialog with Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863-1944), one of the best-known and most influential protagonists of Modernism, has another special exhibition dedicated to him in spring 2022 at the Albertina, which takes us on an exciting journey. "Edvard Munch. In Dialog" follows on from the museum's record-breaking exhibitions on Munch in 2003 and 2015.

The focus this time is on the painter's later work. Over 60 works document his oeuvre, which is often characterized by great emotions. In addition, the exhibition also aims to reinforce the importance of Munch's work for modern and contemporary art.

Personal approaches to Munch

Without doubt it is mainly Munch's melancholy philosophy that left its mark on posterity. However, as the exhibition shows, his influence extends far beyond that. Munch's experimental handling of painting and printing techniques, his unique range of colors, his pigments and brushstrokes characterize painting to this day.

As part of the exhibition, seven artists of the present day – all are greats of the 20th century – enter into dialog with Edvard Munch: Georg Baselitz, Andy Warhol, Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Tracy Emin, and Jasper Johns. Their exhibited works make reference to Munch, are influenced by him or came about in the debate with him. With each artist selecting their own, very personal approach to Munch's art. On view are references to Munch's forest landscapes, his impressive portraits – and above all: intense, human emotions.
