Beethoven – the total work of art
For a change, it is not Beethoven's Fifth but Beethoven's Sixth Symphony which stands at the heart of the action. Because Viennese Art Nouveau painter and Klimt colleague Josef Maria Auchentaller managed to create a monumental artwork for the music room of his father-in-law with the interpretation of the so-called "Pastoral".
All in one set
The silver jewelry maker Georg Adam Scheid gave Auchentaller free rein with the design (1898/99): the ensemble comprising five paintings represents the first artistic-pictorial implementation of all movements of a Beethoven symphony and is unique in the tradition of the music rooms that flourished in the years around 1900. In Beethoven Year 2020, the Leopold Museum now presents a reconstruction of this ensemble and casts light on Auchentaller's total work of art as part of a focus exhibition on the new permanent presentation Vienna 1900.
Josef Maria Auchentaller joined the Vienna Secession in the year of its founding (1897). In addition to painting, he was also active as a graphic artist and jewelry designer. The artist's treatment of Beethoven's work stands in ideally typical form for the veneration of the exceptional composer by the artists of the Vienna Secession. A counterpart to Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze is Auchentaller's mural "Freude, schöner Götterfunken", which unfortunately remains lost. The work was created specially for the XIV Secession Exhibition of 1902, which was dedicated to the Viennese-by-choice Beethoven.
The exhibition "Inspiration Beethoven" shows the reconstruction of Auchentaller's music room as well as numerous works by Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, and Alfred Roller. The diverse exhibits show how Beethoven increasingly became a muse and source of inspiration for Vienna Modernism in the visual arts at the turn of the previous century.
