Of ground and land

Our land. It's as important as the air we breathe. An asset we all take for granted without giving it very much thought. Land is simply there. But for how much longer? Our planet's surface is finite, so land will also become an increasingly fought-over resource in the years to come. A resource that has been carelessly dealt with for far too many decades. It was all about maximizing profit, growing capital. Higher, faster, farther. And now? We have now arrived at a point where rising house prices, the decades-long reshaping of cities and villages is making us ask ourselves: When can we expect to see a bold land-use policy that focuses on the future above all else?

The exhibition "Land for Us All" (Boden für alle) at the Austrian Architecture Museum (Az W) clearly and concisely presents the political, legal and economic background of current land-use policy – in Austria and abroad. Without forgetting to also ask critical questions: How does rural land become construction land? Why is the price of land rising? And what does any of this have to do with the spaces we inhabit? Exciting international examples illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of policies in different countries, examples of best practice highlight alternative approaches. On show are photos, videos, animations, models, and an installation.

An exhibition that shows us new ways of doing things and presents tools for spatial planning that conserves land as a resource, mitigates the impact of climate change, helps with housing issues, and facilitates good architecture. This exhibition at the Az W perfectly prepares the way for new and innovative ideas.
