Vienna Museum Hermes Villa
The renowned architect Carl von Hasenauer built this romantic mansion from 1882 to 1886, and its name derives from the statue of Hermes in the villa’s garden. With its sumptuous furnishing, the building is considered one of the outstanding examples of villa architecture of the late romantic period. The best artists of Historicism – among them Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch – designed the private imperial chambers.
An exhibition on the first floor shows the history of the building and its occupants. Many personal objects of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth as well as original furniture convey a sense of the imperial lifestyle of the time. The huge bed of state in the Empress's bedroom dates from the time of Maria Theresa.
The restaurant "Hermes" offers top-class dining with a focus on Viennese cuisine and game specialties. The restaurant has been redesigned and offers neo-rustic accents with tongue-in-cheek hunting motifs.
