At Christmas: Safe in Vienna for sure!
The online travel magazine "European Best Destinations" has classified Vienna as one of the safest travel destinations in Europe at Christmastime with regard to COVID-19. Vienna thus numbers among the "European Safest Christmas Destinations 2020". The assessment is based on criteria such as government health measures, hygiene standards in hotels, businesses, restaurants, and public transport, provision of disinfectant and face coverings, proximity to hospitals, number of hospital beds per capita and, of course, the number of COVID-19 cases per one million inhabitants.
Vienna comes third in the ranking after the island of Madeira (Portugal) and the city of Tallinn (Estonia). Every year at Christmastime, Vienna is a popular travel destination. This year, too, guests can feel safe in Vienna and at the Viennese Christmas markets. The precise safety concepts for the Christmas markets are currently being elaborated. Specifically, safety distances will be complied with by managing visitor numbers. Face coverings for sales staff and visitors to the Christmas markets will remain mandatory for the time being.
The official guidelines for the Christmas markets include the following measures:
- Mandatory face coverings for visitors and employees (except when consuming food and drinks)
- Disinfectant dispensers and regular hand hygiene
- No indoor activities
- One-way regulations & marshal services
- Recommendation not to organize a children's program
- Maximum of 4 people per tall table in dedicated zones
- Face coverings to be worn in toilets, and regular disinfection of contact surfaces
With regard to COVID-19, Vienna was already voted one of the 20 safest travel destinations in Europe by "European Best Destinations" in June 2020. At the time, Vienna was described as "ideal for travelers who are looking for a safe and peaceful travel destination".
