Idols & Rivals - Artists in competition
Today, the terms “rivalry”, “contest” and “competition” are primarily associated with business, sport, the theory of evolution, architecture, or a variety of TV games. However, in the Early Modern era, the principle of rivalry was a driving force behind artistic endeavors. The KHM examines this important subject in a major exhibition titled “Idols & Rivals”. Although there have been occasional exhibitions about rivalry between the arts (paragone in Italian) in the past, there has never been an examination of the contemporary struggles for prominence between the artists themselves, or with their famous, long-dead rivals. This tension gave rise to what are now some of the most well-known works of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The exhibition will show outstanding works belonging to the KHM together with around 70 other major pieces from international collections, including paintings by Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer, Titian, and Peter Paul Rubens, offering a nuanced consideration of this equally complex and fascinating subject. Many of the selected paintings and sculptures will be on show in Austria for the first time.
Exhibition dates: September 20, 2022, to January 8, 2023. Details at www.khm.at
