The Kunsthistorisches Museum was built from 1871 to 1891 under Emperor Franz Joseph for the Habsburg collections and, with its unique art treasures, is one of the most important museums in the world. The rich holdings include objects from five millennia, from the time of ancient Egypt to the end of the 18th century. The Picture Gallery is one of the most important of its kind and houses masterpieces from Dürer to Raphael, Titian and Tintoretto, Rubens and Velázquez, Rembrandt and Vermeer to works by Gustav Klimt in the staircase. Particularly noteworthy is the world's largest collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, including such famous paintings as The Tower of Babel, The Peasant Wedding or The Hunters in the Snow.
A jewel of the house is the Kunstkammer with the famous Saliera by Benvenuto Cellini. Experience the fascination of a world of beauty, curiosity and wonder. Or immerse yourself in the Collection of Classical Antiquities and the Egyptian-Oriental Collection and embark on a journey to bygone eras. The architecture and magnificent furnishings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum are a work of art in themselves and invite you to marvel and discover.
Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:30, Thursday until 21.00
