Rainbow Parade & Rainbow Park
The setting is unrivaled worldwide: On 18 June 2016, Vienna's Ringstrasse boulevard belongs to gays, lesbians, transgenders and many others engaged in the fight for equality and against the discrimination of LGBTs. Souped-up semitrailers (with sound systems a village disco can only dream of), motorcycles, horse-drawn carriages and marching bands at the Rainbow Parade send a clear (and loud) signal for greater tolerance. Around 100,000 people will be there. The parade makes its way along the Ringstrasse boulevard. It starts at 3.00 pm at Schottentor. The lap of the Ring takes about four hours.
The Rainbow Park in the Sigmund Freud Park in front of the Votive Church is open from 16 to 18 June and offers an extensive program of activities. Trendy restaurants provide refreshments. There’s live music on a big stage. The warm-up to the parade starts here at 10.00 am on the Saturday and the big closing rally takes place at about 7.00 pm in the Rainbow Park.
Visitors who want to carry on partying afterward will be superbly rewarded with dozens of parties at various clubs from Saturday night until the sun comes up again on Sunday.
Again this year guided tours on the history of homosexuality at the University of Vienna will take place in English and German.
