Viennese cuisine is world-famous and enjoys a good international reputation. Traditionally, Vienna's culture of enjoyment is to be found in the down-to-earth inn (the Viennese beisl).
Viennese cuisine is the only type of cooking in the world to be named after a city.
Yet top-flight dining also makes reference to Viennese cuisine, modernizing and perfecting it to the very highest level. Popular restaurants such as the Opus in the Hotel Imperial, Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald in the Grand Hotel Vienna and the restaurant Walter Bauer bear witness to this. These have award-winning cuisine honored by the Michelin Guide. Also awarded with one Michelin star each is the exciting, contemporary cuisine of the restaurant Konstantin Filippou, the Mediterranean-inspired dishes at the restaurant Edvard in the Hotel Kempinski and the purely vegetarian cuisine at the Tian.
In a class of their own are the Steirereck in the Stadtpark, Amador's Wirtshaus & Greisslerei, the Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant in Palais Coburg and the restaurant Mraz & Sohn; all four have been awarded two stars each by the Michelin Guide. The Steirereck even ranks tenth on the list of the "World's 50 Best Restaurants". Reinterpretations of old recipes and almost forgotten ingredients of Austrian cuisine make the dishes at the Steirereck something special. Juan Amador also cooked his way straight to two stars after moving to Vienna.
As a world city, Vienna also offers international cuisine from Italian (such as at Fabios) to Japanese (Shiki) at the highest level.
