ハプスブルク歴代の皇帝や大公が数百年の間に収集した2100点以上の貴重な美術工芸品は、ウィーン美術収集室に展示されています。これは世界で最も重要な美術工芸コレクションのひとつです。
膨大な美術工芸品を収集したのは、ルドルフII世を筆頭に、ハプスブルク歴代皇帝です。これらの貴重な作品群が、美術史博物館 (Kunsthistorisches Museum) で再び一般公開されています。ハイライトのひとつは、ベンヴェヌート・チェッリーニの高価な塩壷サリエラで、16世紀半ばに制作されたものです。マリア・テレジアの豪華な朝食セットなど、貴重な金細工品の数々も展示されています。
加えて、中世以降の貴重な作品の数々が紹介されています。木彫、時計、絵画、彫刻、タペストリー、硬貨、武器、自然界の珍しい品々などです。中には、サメの歯の化石を用いた「ヘビの舌のテーブル飾り」（1450年頃）も見られます。こうした化石は、神秘に包まれた竜のものと考えられていたのです。また本物のヒキガエルから鋳型をとった置物もあります。もうひとつのハイライトは、ラピスラズリによるドラゴンカップです。酒宴の余興に用いられた様々な容器類も、珍品コレクションに彩を添えています。
2002年から2012年にかけて修復・改装された美術工芸品コレクションの価値は、計り知れないものです。つまり、当時の権力者が収集品を納めた「美術と珍品の宝庫」は、博物館であると同時に、世界に関する当時の知識を集大成したものだったのです。そのうち2162点がウィーンに保存され、20の展示室に紹介されています。ウィーン美術収集室の2717平方メートルに上る展示フロアでは、1000年以上の歴史を辿ることができます。最古の展示品は、9世紀に制作された象牙のプレートで、最新のものは1891年の天井画です。

Guided tours for visitors with special needs as well as tactile tours for the blind and visually impaired on request (Tel. +43 1 525 24-5202). Three masterpieces of the Renaissance collection of the painting gallery, selected objects of the Kunstkammer, the Egyptian-Oriental collection and the collection of antiquities are available to the blind and visually impaired as castings for touching. The museum is a place of encounter and sensory perception and offers plenty of opportunity to stimulate vistors and motivate them to interact with one another by looking at art together and then getting creative themselves.
