Muzeul de Istoria Artei este unul dintre cele mai importante edificii din această categorie graţie celei mai ample colecţii de picturi de Bruegel din lume.
Aici Gustav Klimt a pictat în 1891, cu Compania de Artişti 40 de picturi, în spaţiile dintre coloane şi timpane, decorând astfel suprafeţele rămase libere între arcurile şi coloanele magnificei case a scărilor din muzeu.
Aici, cei trei pictori au reprezentat marile epoci ale istoriei artei, utilizând figuri simbolice. Un panou informativ amplasat pe o măsuţă de lângă balustrada casei scărilor vă oferă explicaţii despre reprezentări şi semnificaţia acestora. Această lucrare a fost ultima operă importantă a Companiei de Artişti. După moartea fratelui Ernst în anul 1892, Klimt încetează colaborarea cu Matsch.

Three masterpieces of the Renaissance collection of the painting gallery, selected objects of the Kunstkammer, the Egyptian-Oriental collection and the collection of antiquities are available to the blind and visually impaired as castings for touching. The museum is a place of encounter and sensory perception and offers plenty of opportunity to stimulate vistors and motivate them to interact with one another by looking at art together and then getting creative themselves.
