I soffitti di Klimt
Fu qui che Gustav Klimt realizzò nel 1891, insieme con la sua compagnia di artisti, i 40 cosiddetti "pennacchi e intercolumni", vale a dire le superfici rimaste libere fra le arcate e le colonne della grandiosa scalinata all'interno del museo.
In tale opera i tre pittori usarono delle figure simboliche per raffigurare le grandi epoche storiche dell'arte. In un tavolino posto accanto alla balaustra della scalinata si trova incassata una tavola con un testo che informa sul significato delle figure. Questo fu l'ultimo lavoro, di una certa importanza, realizzato dalla compagnia di artisti. In seguito alla morte del fratello Ernst, avvenuta nel 1892, la collaborazione fra Klimt e Matsch cessò.
