About the Event

Performance as part of ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival

Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was a flamboyantly talented Dadaist. Born in Świnoujście in present-day Poland, she was active in New York’s Dada movement, was considered a “walking work of art”, published poems, was friends with Marcel Duchamp, and died in Paris in 1927. Today, there is speculation as to whether the baroness, a found-object artist, was the true author of his famous urinal readymade Fountain (1917). This fascinating personality is the subject of a collaboration between Hungarian performer Boglárka Börcsök and German filmmaker Andreas Bolm. Börcsök previously explored the life and work of Valeska Gert, among others, and in 2022, she presented the performance Figuring Age (also in collaboration with Andreas Bolm) at ImPulsTanz in mumok. SUBJOYRIDE takes the audience on an inspiring journey to the 1920s, Dada and the baroness, who was saved for posterity by Djuna Barnes, the publisher of her poems and autobiography.
