Vienna Furniture Museum: The Emperor's Couch

Among the many thousands of exhibits amassed over five centuries, with special emphasis on Biedermeier and Historicism, one also finds a Baroque easy-chair on wheels, an imperial travel throne and praying-stools with velvet pillow-covers.

Ensembles such as the fittings and fixtures of Empress Elisabeth's farmers' parlor in the Schönbrunn dairy and a young girl's room in the Biedermeier style, spittoons, commodes elegantly disguised as seating, and other curiosities can also be marveled at.

Also definitely worth seeing is the exhibition area dedicated to the bentwood furniture of the Thonet brothers and to the great architects of Vienna Modernism (Wagner, Hoffmann, Loos). Also collected and displayed are ensembles and furniture from the inter-war period through to Austrian furniture design of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Also on display: the permanent exhibition Sissi in the Movies, which takes a look behind the scenes of the world-famous 1950s trilogy with Romy Schneider.

The Emperor's Couch

A special guided tour entitled "The Emperor's Couch" gives a glimpse into the so-called Federal Property Administration right next door to the Vienna Furniture Museum, once a month. The furniture of the former imperial house of Habsburg-Lothringen, which is still used at official receptions of the Republic of Austria, is kept there. Visitors on the tours learn which red carpets are rolled out for which occasions and what the Emperor's Couch is still used for today. The tours end in the Vienna Furniture Museum, where permanent and special exhibitions can also be visited. Information and application
