Austrian Post Savings Bank

The Post Savings Bank on the Ringstrasse boulevard is considered to be one of the most important buildings of the Vienna Modernism period. Architect Otto Wagner left his mark on the Austrian capital like no other and built his most modern and significant structure in the form of the Post Savings Bank.

Compared with other buildings dating from that time – such as the former Imperial-Royal War Ministry on the opposite side of the Ring Boulevard – Otto Wagner’s style seems consistently modern and functional. The façade is covered with weatherproof granite and marble, and also aluminum – new for its time – is used inside and out: for example, on the railings and the figurines on the roof, the fittings on the door and the warm-air dispensers in the hall. The entire interior fittings were also designed by Otto Wagner – highly aesthetic in every detail.

The historic banking hall is an architectural highlight and is now open to the public again. In 2022, the University of Applied Arts Vienna moved into the Post Savings Bank, in the course of which the banking hall became an exhibition space and a café, where visitors can let the unique ambience work its magic on them.
