Marionette Theater in Schönbrunn Palace
Throughout the year, the marionettes captivate young and old with a wide variety of changing performances from opera, operetta and musical. As a full-length adult program or in adaptations for the whole family. Today's venue has an imperial history: the predecessor theater already existed in the time of Maria Theresa.
Strauss, Mozart, musical
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart comes to life as a marionette figure and leads adults (in the long version) and children (in a shorter version) through his Magic Flute. Johann Strauss also makes an appearance in his Fledermaus for Chrildren, fitting for the Strauss anniversary year 2025, in which Vienna celebrates his 200th birthday. The plot of Johann Strauss - The Danube Waltz revolves around the Danube river, culminating in the world-famous "The Blue Danube Waltz“, danced by the legendary Danube women.
With Aladdin and the Magic Lamp or Knight Kamembert, children and adults experience a musical with marionettes as the main characters.

On delicate threads
The marionettes, costumes, stage sets and stage technology are painstakingly crafted in the Marionette Theater's own workshops in collaboration with prominent directors, stage and costume designers. On average, the puppet theater's handmade figures measure 60 centimeters, to which the players give life, grace and soul for a short time. They lead the audience into a magical world.
250-year playing tradition
The Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater has been continuing an old marionette play tradition since 1994: As early as 1777, Empress Maria Theresa hosted Prince Esterházy's puppet theater at Schönbrunn Palace Theater in honor of distinguished guests from Saxony.
The special puppetry technique was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2016. On worldwide tours, there have been many high awards for the equally dedicated and professional team of the Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater.
