Vienna Design Week
Vienna Design Week turns Vienna into a hotspot for design every year – this year’s event will be the 17th in its history. In collaboration with Vienna's museums, production companies, and local designers, the festival offers various ways to approach the topic of design: as part of events, exhibitions, installations, guided tours, and workshops. The focus is on the diverse creative output that the local design scene is known for and ranges from product and furniture design to graphic and social design.
In the spotlight: the 2nd district
This year’s focus district, which rotates on an annual basis, is the 2nd district, Leopoldstadt. The 2nd district has a varied and multicultural character. It is a hotspot for Jewish culture – there are lots of historic synagogues, kosher shops and restaurants here. Many other communities have found a home in the 2nd district too. One attraction is the Prater, which features both an amusement park and a huge public green space. The headquarters of this year’s festival is located on the edge of the Prater in the former magdas Hotel (Laufberggasse 12). This is where exhibitions, talks and workshops will take place.
Handicraft in focus
Vienna Design Week casts light on the production processes of design and handicraft. Studio visits and tours to production sites are therefore an important component of the festival. The Passionswege format is also exciting, as it brings together international and Austrian designers with Viennese artisans. This year's partners are hatmaker Biester and the stove manufacturer Pyrarium. Vienna Design Week is also dedicated to the topic of "Urban Food & Design". The aim is for concrete design solutions for the food industry to be elaborated together with companies.
